Here at Regular Cleaning, we like to recognise strong job performance and allow our employees to develop their strengths and progress in their career. Hugo Burgos is testament to this. He started as a Cleaning Operative in 2009 and worked hard to earn promotion to his position current role as Health and Safety Advisor at our Head Office. We would like to celebrate his success and also share his journey with you .
Hugo moved to the UK from Bolivia in 2002. He started at Regular Cleaning 7 years later and immediately felt welcomed into the company and valued as an employee. His English skills were very limited at this stage, so he was even more determined to make an impression and show his ability.
His strong attention to detail and trustworthiness meant that Hugo was quickly recognised as a hard worker and a value member of the team. Hugo felt quite shy and reserved due to the language barrier, however, naturally, his English improved through talking to other colleagues and clients and he gained more confidence. During this time he also built a strong working relationship with his Contract Manager, George Wakeling. He enjoyed the Cleaning Industry but felt like he wanted to progress into a more senior role. He took the initiative and asked George for regular updates on job positions and training.
After only 1 year at Regular Cleaning, Hugo was encouraged by George to apply for a Mobile Supervisor position. His proactive approach and willingness to learn meant that Hugo was a great fit for this position. He faced challenges in this role including understanding cultural differences within his team and management processes. He told George the areas he would like to improve, and, as a result, he received management training through Regular Cleaning to help enhance his skills. Hugo was more confident speaking English, however, he still felt there was room for improvement before he could move up into a Contract Manager position and communicate with clients on a regular basis.
He remained very expressive and open about what he would like to achieve. His enthusiasm to move further up within Regular Cleaning was rewarded as he was encouraged to apply for the Health and Safety Advisor position in Head Office. Hugo was slightly hesitant at first, but, after some reassurance from George, he applied and got the position! From this point on, Hugo has been delivering excellent results alongside Gary Williamson, the HSQE Director. Hugo feels extremely grateful to have enhanced his skills with Regular Cleaning and would like to thank everyone, George and Gary especially, for their continued support throughout his career
We asked Hugo what advice he would give anybody looking to follow in his footsteps. He said “always be willing to learn more, have an open mind and be proactive”.
